Mathematics Film and Animation

Background

The idea for high-quality short films for teaching mathematical concepts originated with the MIT Department of Mathematics and Girl’s Angle: a Cambridge, MA – based mathematics club for girls. For the film “Slope” (see below), we collaborated with MIT Prof. Katrin Wehrheim and other mathematics educators. ”Slope” is the first in what we hope will become an extensive series of short films for teaching and learning mathematics in middle and high school.

Visualizations

In addition to 2D and 3D animation, “Slope” features live video courtesy of Women’s Ski Jumping USA. The animations were created in 3D Studio Max and After Effects – if you are interested to learn more about our process, check out also the 2D painting and animation for “Slope” post from our Bits & Pixels blog.
